Food Not Bombs: Using Food Waste to Feed the Planet

According to the EPA, Americans waste more than 40 percent of all domestically grown food. This often overlooked issue affects our country economically and socially and contributes to rising levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Food policy affects every human on earth, and we must consider issues related to food if a more sustainable future is to be obtained.

There are a number of ways we can work together to combat this issue. Organizations such as Food Not Bombs take a community-oriented approach to reducing food waste, and operate in numerous cities worldwide. Individuals or companies who wish to donate excess food can do so via the Good Samaritan Food Donation Act of 1996. Finally, as consumers we can be mindful about the resources we consume. If we examine these issues and make changes in our own lives, both the planet and its inhabitants will benefit.
