Sustainability planning must keep political and financial realities in mind during the planning process. We review two cases - Boston and Chattanooga. In the former, the city has used financial tools to make sustainability planning a success. In the second, the sustainability committee made unrealistic assumptions about political and financial realities and ended up with a plan with no funding.
