Another Clunker: Minnesota's Energy Rebate Website Crashed by Consumers

Minnesota and Iowa launched their “trade in and save” programs today, designed to encourage home owners to trade in their appliance “clunkers” for energy-star models. The program has been so successful both sites have crashed.

The program would spend nearly $5 million in federal stimulus funds in Minnesota alone, and is expected to help 25,000 households buy energy star appliances.

Consumers get:

• clothes washers ($200)

• dishwashers ($150)

• freezers ($100 with purchase and proof that their old unit has been taken off the grid; $50 for purchase only)

• refrigerators ($200 with purchase and proof that their old unit has been off the grid; $100 for purchase only)

The program will be replicated in 37 states across the nation. For more rebate programs in your state, go to http://www.dsireusa.org/

Have the rebates gotten you to take the leap into clean appliances? Let us know why or why not in the comments below.
