For the first time in its ten year history, the Gallup poll has revealed that Americans believe energy production should be prioritized over environmental protection.
50% of the survey's respondents said development of U.S. energy supplies, including oil, gas, and coal, should be given priority even if the environment suffers. Only 43% said protection of the environment should be the top priority, even if it hamstrings energy supplies.
Perhaps this year's survey is a reflection of the severe economic crunch that has been occurring since 2008 -- coincidentally, the past polls, including this year's poll, have shown shrinking numbers for the environment.
The Gallup poll also showed that staunchly advocate greater energy conservation (52%) by consumers over greater production of oil, coal, and gas supplies (36%). However, this is the largest number of votes increased production has ever received.
