Gary Dirks is the Director of Arizona State University’s LightWorks project, which, among many other sun-centered research, is hoping to use the principle of solar power to design synthetic systems. The project looks to nature to learn the basic or scientific principles underlying photosynthesis, and then uses those principles to design man-made synthetic systems that can carry out this process. Their goal is get their lab-based research on non-biological photosynthesis closer to development and, eventually, the marketplace.
