Durand-Eastman beach has been a part of Rochester for over a century. The beach is a welcome relief for the city residents. Whether walking on the beach or swimming in the water, everyone can enjoy this beautiful public environment. One day in 2020 when I visited the beach, I was shocked to find that the lake had entirely consumed the beach. Suddenly, I was very aware that this place may be more fragile than I had once thought. I set out to answer if the beach has at other times been inaccessible to residents and if the beach will still be accessible in the future.
