Washington D.C. used to have a well covered tree canopy. However, due to urbanization, tree coverage has decreased over the years from 50% to 35%. Casey Trees, a nonprofit in Washington D.C, has mobilized volunteers in order to attain a goal of 40% tree coverage in D.C. by 2032. This model of grassroots tree planting is scalable to other cities as there are many similar initiatives around the country.
